Impoundment?Associated Hydro?Mechanical Changes and Regional Seismicity Near the Xiluodu Reservoir, Southwestern China

چکیده

Four large hydropower stations have recently been built downstream the Jinsha River in Southwestern China with a strong regional tectonic activity background. There is widely felt seismicity since impoundment of Xiluodu and Xiangjiaba reservoirs, increasing public concern this region. We begin criticality analysis faults near these reservoirs to quantify their susceptibility triggered seismicity. Then we focus on reservoir investigate correlation between nearby. analyze spatio-temporal distribution reservoir, identify plausible rapid delayed seismic response due impoundment. According record, explicitly model hydro-mechanical changes diffusion water load, that is, pore pressure, elastic stress, resulting Coulomb stress. Our results show pressure can reach level may trigger fault reactivation consequently, The load also induce positive stress faults, depending orientation, which especially important for understanding earthquakes occurred shortly after at more than 10 km distance from reservoir. combination two effects change over larger area, overlaps majority events impoundment, including M5+ events. While causal relationship warrants further analysis, hope inform impact timely study.

Reservoir-induced Seismicity in China

A review of case histories of reservoir-induced seismicity (RIS) in China shows that it mainly occurs in granitic and karst terranes. Seismicity in granitic terranes is mainly associated with pore pressure diffusion whereas in karst terranes the chemical effect of water appears to play a major role in triggering RIS. In view of the characteristic features of RIS in China, we can expect moderate...

Renewed Seismicity near Monticello Reservoir , South Carolina , 1996 – 1999

A surprising increase in seismicity started in and around Monticello Reservoir, South Carolina in December 1996, and by the end of 1999, over 700 earthquakes with 0.4 ML 2.5 had been located. This seismicity occurred in a new hypocentral region and filled the gaps in earlier seismicity at depths shallower than 2 km. The seismicity occurred in four episodes each with at least one earthquake of m...

Changes in the Radiocarbon Reservoir Age in Lake Xingyun, Southwestern China during the Holocene

Chronology is a necessary component of paleoclimatology. Radiocarbon dating plays a central role in determining the ages of geological samples younger than ca. 50 ka BP. However, there are many limitations for its application, including radiocarbon reservoir effects, which may cause incorrect chronology in many lakes. Here we demonstrate temporal changes in the radiocarbon reservoir age of Lake...

On the Nature of Reservoir-induced Seismicity

In most cases of reservoir-induced seismicity, seismicity follows the impoundment, large lake-level changes, or filling at a later time above the highest water level achieved until then. We classify this as initial seismicity. This ‘‘initial seismicity’’ is ascribable to the coupled poroelastic response of the reservoir to initial filling or water level changes. It is characterized by an increa...

Discussion of seismicity near Jaitapur

We thank Rastogi for pointing out a number of factual errors in our article, and welcome this opportunity to correct several scientific misunderstandings that have crept into his manuscript. Rastogi is in agreement with our statements and conclusions concerning the seismicity in the Jaitapur region that: (a) no significant M > 6 earthquakes have been recorded by seismographs located within 50 k...
